Man sells world’s first diamond-encrusted contact lenses

An optometrist from India has made the world's first diamond and gold encrusted contact lenses. Dr Chandrashekhar Chawan, director of the Shekhar Eye Research center in Mumbai has already sold the first pair of the opulent lenses and hopes to arrange international distribution soon. A proportion of the proceeds will go to benefit patients suffering from the life threatening skin condition Stevens Johnson Syndrome. The lenses will cost between US$12000 and US$16000. Dr Chawan claims they are "totally safe" because they cover much of the eye but 'float' several millimeters away from the surface of the eyeball with liquid to protect the cornea and limbus. "They allow plenty of oxygen to reach the eye," he said. There are four designs including: 18 diamonds on white gold, 18 diamonds on yellow gold, just white gold and just yellow gold. "I got a mixed response from people, some said its looks scary but most people loved it," said Dr Chawan. "Bollywood personalities loved the concept and one leading fashion designer told me he thought it was going to be 'the next big thing'," he added. "It takes time for people to digest any new fashion," continued Chawan who hopes that at some stage people might use his diamond contact lenses to propose marriage instead of a diamond ring.
